Memorial Day — Medal of Honor Flag Replacement

During the Memorial Day ceremony at the Arroyo Grande cemetery, VFW Post 10978 South County Nipomo replaced the worn and faded flag at the gravesite of the only Medal of Honor recipient buried in San Luis Obispo County.

Corporal Otis W. Smith was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 24th 1865 for his actions during the Civil War while serving with the 95th Ohio Infantry in action at Nashville, Tennessee.

The light blue color and white stars are adapted from the
Medal of Honor ribbon. The flag commemorates the sacrifice and blood shed for our freedoms and gives emphasis to the
Medal of Honor being the highest award for valor by an
individual serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Special thanks to Mishoulam Insurance and Point of Action in Santa Maria for
providing the replacement flag
